Personal Details

Achim Koerfer was born in the German town of Erkelenz on June 27, 1969. At the age of eight, he discovered his love for photography. What began as playful experimentation with multiple exposures using a conventional camera developed over the years into the singular artistic technique that has become the hallmark of his work.

In keeping with the development that art is no longer restricted to such venues as museums, Koerfer founded his www.unikatfabrik.de website in 2006. After viewing its virtual exhibition presenting a compelling overall impression of his work, it will be clear that the name unikatfabrik, a neologism coined by Koerfer combining "Unikat" - single edition, and "Fabrik" - factory into unikatfabrik - "factory of single editions" - appears only on first sight to be a contradiction in terms. Then Koerfer’s photographic art unites opposites into a harmonious gestalt, opening new avenues of visual perception.

Technique

Composing multiple exposures in situ using a conventional camera – free-hand style – poses a challenge. Koerfer must memorize all details of the first motif before searching for further appropriate motifs and finally superimposing one onto the other on film to create the composition envisioned. Only in this manner is it possible to arrive at a compellingly cohesive work which operates on various levels of visualization and perception. Although Achim Koerfer’s artist’s eye and faculty of visualization are well-schooled, this technique retains some unpredictability. Until a composition matches the artist’s vision, multiple attempts are necessary. But the result always succeeds in captivating the viewer.

Colors of stunning brilliance catch the eye. The commonplace is presented in a surprising new light in striking compositions, complex yet lucidly transparent. An added dimension novel to photography seems to become manifest – time. It is nearly impossible to resist the fascination of Koerfer’s works. The viewer is ultimately moved to involve himself with the topic at hand. Until 2008, Koerfer created individual pieces, though in that same year he began to take up issues of moment which he elaborated in annually published photo sequences. Koerfer’s endeavor to highlight controversial topics presented by these sequences thus provides the viewer food for thought.

Owing to the success of the first exhibition and to popular demand, art dealer Erhard Untiet and his sponsor, the Board of Urban Development and Environmental Concerns of the City of Hamburg decided to reprise the exhibition in another venue. Art Exhibition in Aachen

Aachen/Mönchengladbach - "At last we have an art exhibition held in the course of the World Equestrian Championship where there is not a horse in sight!" was the first thing Aachen mayoress Ms. Verheyen said as artist Achim Koerfer conducted her through the ranks of his artworks. A synergy of unusual caliber took place in the conference rooms of the newly redecorated Mercure Hotel: the interplay between an artist, a club of entrepreneurs and a hotel team. "Art deserves a place in our everyday lives. It is for this reason that (I consider) this venue to have been so aptly chosen." stated Ms. Verheyen, thus highlighting the avowed intent of the organisers of the exhibition, who for this very reason refrained from selecting a conventional art gallery for the venue.
